Its been a couple of weeks since I shared a What to Wear segment and I was itching to do some online shopping.  This latest one is from one of my favorite online stores: Boden. They have really adorable clothes for adults, teens and kids. And their stuff is really well made! I love the fun colors and graphics they use in their clothing.

After I posted the last What to Wear ensemble, I received a request from a client to put together a grouping for her:

These are amazing!! I hate the same old white shirts and jeans or khakis so thank you for pulling these together. Could you do one with navy blue and pink with an outfit for a one year old girl included?

Here you go, Christi.  I had a lot of fun with this one. :)

clientrequest_031210If you have a special request, please email me at karenleslie@mac.com.  Just tell me what colors you want me to work with and the type of session (e.g., kids session, ages 3 & 7 or family session: mom, dad, girl age 12 and boy age 5.)

Enjoy! xoxo,

The newest edition to KarenLeslie Photography’s What to Wear series is a Modern & Stylish Family Session.  I love pairing browns and blues and in this case I added a small touch of green (olive green to be exact).  Notice that there are patterns involved in this grouping, but none of them overwhelms the other.  And, there’s enough solids to even out the few patterns that are there.

What to Wear: Modern & Stylish

There are a couple of things to consider when coordinating outfits for a photo session:

  • You don’t have to fall back on the easy combinations of black, white or khaki — don’t be afraid to think outside of the box
  • Choose something that matches the personality of the people being photographed: modern & funky, colorful and fun, conservative and classic.
  • Don’t be afraid of color or pattern; however, don’t overdo it.  Choose one outfit that is full of color and pattern and have the other outfits coordinate with it, but not overpower it.
  • Don’t think that neutrals are only black, white and khaki.  Green, blue, brown can also be neutrals.
  • Don’t forget to coordinate your shoes!  Yes, your feet will be in the photograph.
  • Going “shopping” in your own closet often reveals some real treasures.

Is there a particular color combination you’d like to see?  Email me at karenleslie@mac.com and I’ll put something together for you!

I have to admit that I’m having way too much fun making these What to Wear boards.  Its almost like shopping. :)   This time I went with a more classic and chic look for a family of four.  The “neutral” colors are grey and black and this time a splash of turquoise blue was thrown in (did you know that turquoise is the “it” color for 2010?).

The question I get asked from clients the most is “what should we wear?”   Often, I find that clients resort to something that is “easy”: white shirts & jeans; black shirts & khaki pants.  Trust me … I understand how intimidating coordinating a group of outfits can be.  But, I’m hoping this new series that I’ll share on my blog will help with sparking your creativity.

The first group of outfits I’ll share with you is a group for a sibling session: baby girl, older girl, older boy.  The grouping is colorful and fun, BUT its not overpowering.  I actually saw the baby girl’s dress as I was shopping the other day and considered getting it for my daughter — I loved the bright colors, checked pattern and splash of green and pink.  I definitely think its a signature piece.  When choosing the outfits for the older siblings to wear, I went with “neutral” jeans for the bottoms.  I wanted to pick up the pink and green from the baby girl’s dress, so I went looking for tops that were in those colors.  Notice I didn’t go for solid colored shirts.  But, each shirt has a subtle pattern that, again, doesn’t overpower the rest of the grouping.  And, I didn’t forget the shoes.  For the girls, I pick pink sandals and for the boy I went with a classic Converse sneaker.  All of these outfits (including the shoes) are from Target and are very affordable.
